2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit: Fourth of July Weekend

The PGA Tour on Wednesday released its schedule for the next 12 months, and it includes the date for the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
The stars of the PGA will be in Detroit the week of June 28, which means the four-day tournament will be July 1-4.
“We are creating the PGA TOUR’s must-see event in 2021 by leveraging the incredible momentum generated from the first two years of the Rocket Mortgage Classic,” Rocket Mortgage Classic executive director Jason Langwell said in a released statement. “Bringing 156 of the world’s best golfers to Detroit over the Fourth of July weekend has proven to be a great way to celebrate the holiday, especially considering we are continuing to make a positive impact on one of our country’s great cities through our efforts with Changing the Course.”

What makes the holiday weekend slot all the more interesting is that the tournament is two weeks after the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego and two weeks before the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s in England. So, one could expect many big names to sign up for the Detroit tournament.
The caveat to this, and any other schedule release nowadays, is COVID-19. However, the PGA Tour, one of the first major sporting organizations in the U.S. to return to play during the pandemic, hasn’t had a tournament delayed or postponed since its restart in June.

And that includes this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, which was July 2-5 after the schedule reshuffling. The tournament was originally scheduled for Memorial Day weekend. Bryson DeChambeau won this year’s tournament.

That tournament did not host any spectators. It’s too early to know whether the 2021 tournament will do the same.

Also on the schedule, the Masters will return to its customary spot in early April at Augusta National Golf Club. This year, the Masters will be played in November with no patrons. This year’s U.S. Open, at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, will be Sept. 17-20.

The 2021 PGA Championship will be May 20-23 at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island in South Carolina.
