URAYASU, Chiba — A new area of attractions featuring the movies “Beauty and the Beast” and “Big Hero 6” opened to visitors at Tokyo Disneyland on Sept. 28, drawing fans who were kept waiting for some five extra months for the launch due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The new section spanning approximately 4.7 hectares is the largest-scale development project for the popular theme park in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo. The zone, which had originally been scheduled to open in April after about three years of construction, straddles the park’s Fantasyland, Tomorrowland and Toontown areas.
At one of the new attractions, “Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast,” visitors can encounter memorable scenes from the animated film from inside magical cups. At Tomorrowland, an attraction based on “Big Hero 6” debuted as the first such installation among Disney theme parks across the globe.
As part of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, guests need to make reservations in advance to visit the new attractions.
Fantasyland’s Forest Theatre, where entertainment shows featuring Disney characters will be held, will be closed to guests for the time being.
Mizuki Matsumoto, a company employee from the city of Noda, Chiba Prefecture, who enjoyed the “Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast” attraction, commented, “I felt as if I were in the movie as the characters were right there.”
Due to the coronavirus crisis, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea closed for about four months from the end of February, before reopening on July 1 after taking virus prevention measures including limiting the number of visitors.
